What Is Live Wedding Event Sketching?

Live event sketching is a service that brings art and elegance to your celebration, with an artist who attends your wedding equipped with their own table and art supplies, ready to create personalized sketches of your guests. It’s an engaging and entertaining luxury experience that elevates your wedding day and gives your guests a cherished keepsake to remember the night.

While your guests enjoy the reception, live sketch artists create exciting hand-drawn fashion illustrations capturing their unique style from photos taken right at our table. Our process is simple; my assistant snaps a quick reference photo of each guest who wishes to be sketched, and those sketches are completed live throughout the night on a first-come, first-served basis. I take a more fashion illustration approach to capture the essence of each guest, focusing on their hair, outfit, and accessories.  Each person sketched takes 10-12 minutes, offering your guests a personalized keepsake just for them!  It is an engaging and entertaining luxury experience that takes an already memorable occasion to the next level.

How Does Live Sketching Compare to Other Wedding Guest Experiences?

Live sketching is refined and engaging. Unlike photo booths, which are digital and playful, or caricatures, which tend to be more humorous, our style is fashion-forward and elegant. Our fashion illustrations capture guests looking their best, turning their style into a memorable couture experience.  It’s not just a favor—it’s a keepsake they often frame.

How Much Space Does a Live Sketch Artist Need at the Venue?

We require approximately 4-5 feet of space next to an outlet to set up our stylish draped table and power our lamps and electronics. Ideally, we set up on the edge of the party—close enough to be a part of the fun without disrupting the flow.

Unique Ideas to Use Live Sketches as Gifts

“The first custom bridal illustration I created was a special gift for my sister-in-law, inspired by a photo of her and her mother walking down the aisle on her wedding day. I printed and framed the digital artwork so they could both cherish this meaningful keepsake, and that kicked off everything!  Since then, many brides have requested custom illustrations with their mothers, from pictures taken at their wedding, to give as heartfelt Mother’s Day gifts.  I even had one bride provide me pictures of her, her two sisters, and her mother, all in their respective wedding gowns, and I illustrated them together on one page, as a gift for her mother.

One of my favorite projects was a bride who commissioned me to illustrate all nine of her bridesmaids, gifting them at the rehearsal dinner as a thank you for sharing in this meaningful moment. Custom illustrations also make great 1st anniversary gifts, which is known as the “paper” anniversary.

Our custom sketches can be printed on stationery and a variety of gift items like ornaments, mugs, journals, and tote bags. Many couples contact me after their wedding to order special gifts for anniversaries and holidays. It’s a stylish and fun way to celebrate the magic of your special day again and again.

When considering which sketch to turn into a gift, choose a photo that truly speaks to you, that brings you joy, and takes you back to that cherished moment. After choosing the image, think about the size and the perfect spot to showcase it. Many clients prefer smaller framed illustrations that become meaningful mementos, beautifully displayed on a bedroom dresser or a coffee table in the living room.”

What Should Couples Look for in a Professional Live Sketch Artist?

Couples should look for an artist who combines creativity with professionalism—someone who brings talent, reflects their style, and is committed to enhancing the overall atmosphere. As a featured vendor at your wedding, attention to detail, clear communication, and reliable follow-up are also important qualities that help reduce stress and ensure a smooth experience.

For live event sketching, I use high-quality markers, pens, and pencils. I prefer these premium art supplies instead of paint because they dry instantly. Copic is my preferred marker brand, but I’m always happy to take a trip to the art store to find new and exciting products! I use a smooth, thick cardstock designed specifically for blending and enhancing the vibrancy of alcohol-based markers, ensuring every sketch is vivid and polished.

How Much Should Couples Budget for a Live Wedding Sketch Artist?

Live sketching falls within the same general category of entertainment and guest experience (photo booths, live musicians, or caricature artists). Most couples who invest in this kind of elevated guest offering set aside a similar portion of their budget—typically anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on event size, hours of service, and the level of personalization involved. What makes live sketching unique is that it’s both entertainment and a bespoke takeaway. It’s a lasting piece of art created in the moment—elegant, interactive, and unforgettable.

We provide tiered packages based on the length of your event and guest count, featuring upgrades such as custom printed paper and a framed illustration for the couple. We encourage them to reach out for a consultation, and we’re happy to create a personalized proposal tailored!

When Should Couples Book Their Artist?

We recommend booking 6–12 months in advance—especially for peak wedding seasons.

For sketches not completed during the reception, but finished afterwards, turnaround is typically 3–4 weeks, just in time to include them in your thank you cards!

Meet Tina Dillingham of Keepsake Couture

I’ve always loved fashion illustration. As a little girl, I would dream up glamorous characters and make them come to life on paper. My passion eventually led me to the big apple where I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and received a degree in Fashion Design & Illustration. I worked in the design industry, gaining experience in fabric, fit, and construction. I’ve even launched my own jewelry line, where I grew an appreciation for intricate details, meaningful pieces, and anything sparkly.

Needless to say, it’s important for me to be creative on a daily basis…and now, my journey has led me to YOU! Let’s work together! It’s an honor to use my passion to transform your most cherished moments into modern, elegant, illustrated keepsakes.
