Expert Advice: 4 Things You Should Know About Wedding Catering and COVID-19

Wedding Catering and COVID-19 Advice

What Precautions Have Been Put in Place for Food Safety?

“Every safety precaution! We are constantly checking in with all of our staff to be sure that everyone has been staying safe and healthy. While prepping before events and during events, we all are wearing masks the entire time while on-site as well as using gloves and extra hand washing protocols.” – Melissa Misgen, owner Elite Events Catering

“We have increased efforts to decrease touch points between both staff and guests. For example, at a chef attended action station guests may not be receiving items directly from the chef, but rather a serving table. Guests still receive the same quality, freshly prepared item.” – Jake Samuels, owner Tastes of Tampa Bay Catering Co.

“Extreme diligence with sanitization and cleaning of equipment. The staff wears gloves and masks at all times. No self-service anything. The table presented hors d’oeuvres, buffets, and stations are all staffed with service personnel who handle the serving utensils and hand prepared plates to guests. Buffet tables, food stations, and bars have extra-wide surfaces between the staff members and the guests. Nothing communal on guest tables: no salt and pepper shakers, bread baskets, etc. Rolled Flatware. Hand sanitizer at all food stations.” – Sherri Salsbury, of Olympia Catering & Events

How Has COVID-19 Affected Menu Selection?

“Prepare to be flexible with your caterer if food item substitutions become necessary as your event date gets closer. COVID has disrupted supply chains, caused many companies to consolidate their inventory of available products and has caused some purveyors to go out of business altogether. What you selected as a menu item one year ago, may or may not be available today. – Sherri Salsbury, Olympia Catering & Events

“We have learned new ways of presenting our menus which has actually become an interesting and exciting challenge. By thinking outside of the box we have thought of new ways to serve items “inside the box” so to speak. For example, we have researched numerous options to serve passed appetizers in a way that is safe and “containerized” and that is attractive and unique.”

“On another note, we are suggesting to change up some of our traditional ways of serving buffets to chef-attended rather than a self-serve. This offers us the chance to create more stylized plates served by our chefs. We are also seeing that by offering more seated dinner options we are able to create a beautifully crafted plate while allowing guests to enjoy and still ensuring a safe atmosphere for all.” – Melissa Misgen, owner Elite Events Catering

“We have been able to keep our menu items consistent but in some cases just changed up the way the items are displayed and served to guests. Butler passed hors’d oeuvres, for example, are served on (or in) mini plates, cups, spoons, etc. to avoid the possibility of any guest accidentally touching any menu items on the serving tray and they are spaced out more than usual (less items per tray). We have been doing mostly sit-down dinners lately and when we are doing buffets they are all chef manned so none of the guests are handling the serving utensils.” – Michael Lamando, owner Amici’s Catered Cuisine

How has COVID-19 Affected Menu Pricing?

“It has not affected menu pricing as far as food. Sanitizing stations and extra service may be added depending on package offerings.” – Jake Samuels, owner Tastes of Tampa Bay Catering Co.

“Covid-19 has certainly had an impact on menu pricing as we need to consider the costs for PPE for all of our staff. It has also caused us to take into consideration the additional costs of using multiple disposables when necessary or the additional staff required for cleaning and dishwashing. Other than that our menu prices still reflect market prices as per usual.” – Melissa Misgen, owner Elite Events Catering

“Aside from some increases in food costs, couples may see some menu price increases due to safety precautions being taken due to COVID-19. First, butler-passed hors d’oeuvres are typically presented on a tray, and guests are invited to take one from the staff member passing the food. These days, those same bite-size hors d’oeuvres are being placed on a small disposable plate, in a shot glass, or some other type of single-use vessel first, and then are placed on a tray to hopefully alleviate guests’ fingers from hitting the tray itself. There is an additional cost for each of those ‘vessels’ that adds to the overall cost of the menu item. Another example has to do with supply and demand. For safety reasons, disposable gloves are invaluable these days. But guess what, a case of gloves that used to cost $40 now costs $100, when you can find them available. Caterers have no choice but to pay the current prices, but those costs end up getting rolled into the menu prices, service charges, or other fees to try to cover the expense. We don’t have the option to work without them.” – Sherri Salsbury, Olympia Catering & Events

What Do Couples Need to Know About Their Menu Selection When It Comes to Intimate Weddings or Elopements?

“There is a common misconception that couples planning intimate weddings will have a smaller catering bill due to a smaller guest count. This may be true, but is not always the case and there are a few different reasons for this. For instance, many food items cost less the more you buy. 200 pounds of beef tenderloin will cost less per pound than 20 pounds of beef tenderloin. This makes the filets cut for the smaller guest count more expensive than the filets cut for the larger guest count. Another aspect of catering cost has to do with labor. The required staff to execute all the different aspects of an event will not go down proportionately to the decrease in guest count. This is not true in all situations, but it is often the case. That having been said, it is absolutely OK for you to ask your caterer why something is priced the way that it is. They will tell you.” – Sherri Salsbury, Olympia Catering & Events

“Be sure that you allow for time to have good conversations with your caterer to go over various options and back up plans.” – Melissa Misgen, owner Elite Events Catering

“The offerings will still be of the highest, freshest quality but service itself may look a little different.” – Jake Samuels, owner Tastes of Tampa Bay Catering Co.

Expert Advice: A Guide to Wedding Catering Styles

What is the secret to making your Tampa Bay wedding day memorable for your guests?

Good food.

As much as your friends and family will ooh and ahh over the decor, if you leave them hungry, that’s what they will remember about your wedding night.

Every couple wants to make their wedding unique and personal, so in addition to what food you offer at your wedding, HOW you serve it can add to the guest experience.

“Regardless of the style you choose, you shouldn’t compromise on the quality of service, nor food. You should choose from menu options you love while knowing your guests and all the details are taken care of while you’re enjoying your first meal as a married couple,” Casey Grawien, owner of Tastes of Tampa Bay, explains.

We asked Tampa Bay’s best wedding caterers, Tastes of Tampa Bay, Elite Events Catering, Amici’s Catered Cuisine and Olympia Catering to share their expertise for A Guide to Wedding Catering Styles.

Expert Advice: A Guide to Tampa Bay Wedding Catering Styles

Traditional Plated, Sit-Down Meal

Melissa Misgen owner of Elite Events Catering, explains:
“Every couple has their own unique style, so there is never a right or wrong way. The most important part of the wedding celebration is for the newlywed couple to have as much time together with their friends and family as possible. The time goes by all too fast, so in my experience, the biggest benefit of having a plated meal (even if that is just for a plated salad course) is to get everyone all together at the same time. This creates a great opportunity for the couple to give thanks to their guests for being there on their wedding day. It also is a wonderful way to offer a formality to the reception where everyone feels like they can relax for a moment and be served.”

Casey Grawien, owner of Tastes of Tampa Bay, shares:
A great start to choosing your wedding catering styled is to book your venue. From there, it will narrow things down considerably. No outdoor access? No food truck! Limited service area? No stations!

Next, take an overall look at your budget and desired dinner timeline. If you’d like to keep things expedited and traditional (toasts, speeches, etc.), a plated meal is for you.

Sherri Salsbury, Catering Sales Manager for Olympia Catering, offers an interesting perspective about plated meals:
Seated, sit-down, or plated, these terms essentially mean the same thing. Guests are seated at their respective tables, their meal is brought out from the kitchen by serving staff and placed in front of each guest much like in a restaurant setting. The menu is pre-determined by the host of the event. They may provide all guests with the same meal or they may allow their guests to choose from different entree choices, such as chicken, beef, or fish.

Some people prefer a seated dinner because they feel that it is more formal. Others may be worried about the quantity of food being served to each person. Will it be enough? A plated meal with entree choices is more work for the couple to track because they will need to track each guest’s meal selection and provide that to the caterer by table. In addition, they will need to have a place card at each place setting with the appropriate meal choice indicated for the service staff.

Susan Atteberry, Sales and Events Coordinator for Amici’s Catered Cuisine, shares the pros and cons:
A plated meal is a more formal presentation of your guests’ meal and requires additional staff to handle, as the meal is presented to them at their assigned seats and timing for your dinner is more easily handled.

However, during a seated dinner your guests do not have the opportunity to mingle as much during dinner and guests do not have the opportunity to have seconds on any of the food being offered.

Share the Love Family Style

Sherri of Olympia Catering reminds you:
This type of service has been gaining momentum over recent years. It is similar to a plated dinner in that guests do not have to leave their tables to get their food. However, it is different in that instead of individual meals being set in front of each guest, serving bowls and platters are brought out to each guest table for guests to pass around the table. Think Thanksgiving at Grandma’s house. Many people like this service style because they think it lends itself to more camaraderie and conversation as food is passed from person to person at each table. This does require more table space so larger tables and/or smaller centerpieces work well with family style service. Pricing can be more expensive than a plated meal depending on the caterer because some will actually bring more food overall to accommodate the tables that empty their serving platters and ask for more.

Multi-Selection Buffet

Sherri of Olympia Catering explains:
In this scenario, guests go to a buffet table, get their food, and take it back to their table to sit down and eat. In hotels, this style of service is typically more expensive than a seated dinner, but for off-premise catering, it is usually less expensive than a seated dinner. Naturally, there are exceptions to every rule. Some couples like buffets because guests can actually choose what they will eat. Others dislike buffets because they imagine long lines of guests waiting to eat. Some caterers will set up their buffets as “self-serve” while others will have staff behind the buffet line serving the guests as they come through to expedite service and enhance the overall guest experience.

Susan of Amici’s Catered Cuisine adds:
A buffet offers a more casual atmosphere and lends itself to allow your guests to mingle during the dinner offering. They can return to the buffet for second helpings, and there are usually more food options available on a buffet than a sit-down dinner. A buffet lends itself to easily presenting a themed presentation and food selection, but dinner can run longer than anticipated because guests can return to the buffet for second helpings.

Casey of Tastes of Tampa Bay provides a unique twist on a traditional buffet:
If you don’t have the budget for the service and rentals costs a plated meal adds, a buffet is for you. Keep things fun and relaxed and have food truck service by combining a food truck served entree with a dinner buffet. Customized selection lets guests choose from what they want while keeping a timeline on track.

“Active” Food Stations

Sherri of Olympia Catering explains:
Food stations tend to be “active” stations meaning that something is being prepared in front of the guests at each station. This can offer an entertainment element or be more experiential for the guests than a typical buffet setting. Take, for instance, the beloved pasta station where multiple types of pasta, sauces, proteins, and accompaniments are available based on what each guest wants. The station chef will combine the ingredients requested by the guest in a pasta pan and toss over heat, creating that guests requested dish.

Sometimes service times can be lengthier with stations depending on the size of the event. Stations also take up more space in the room. This can be a good thing if you have a smaller guest count and a larger room but is not good if you are maxing out the space of the venue. Stations can allow more creativity in terms of station decor and what vessels the food is actually being served in. Things like Asian take-out containers for stir-fry or mini-iron skillets with individual baked macaroni and cheese can be fun and unexpected. Food stations tend to be one of the more expensive styles of service because there is typically more food overall, more china, and more staff involved.

Cocktail-Style Reception

Sherri of Olympia Catering shares:
In my opinion, this term actually refers more to the seating available to guests than to the service style of the food. With a cocktail style type reception, there is typically not seating for all of the guests. There may be some seating, but there are also tall cocktail tables and/or furniture groupings available. The “meal” in this scenario may be active stations or passed hors d’oeuvres or a combination of passed and table-presented hors d’oeuvres, featuring “grab and go” items that don’t require knives to eat.

Susan of Amici’s Catered Cuisine explains:
A cocktail-style reception promotes a very casual atmosphere and allows for smaller portions of more food options for your guests. Though this service styled does not usually offer seating for all guests at a designated time and guests can congregate around different stations, making it more difficult for others to reach the items being offered.

Casual, Rustic Waterfront St. Pete Wedding | Tampa Bay Watch

Tampa Bay Bridal Show TheXpos | February 10, 2019

Michelle and Michael’s waterfront St. Pete wedding tied together the bride and groom’s love for world travel with rustic decor and adorable DIY centerpieces. Looking to complement their beautiful surroundings, the couple chose a navy and grey color palette that matched perfectly with their outdoor St. Pete wedding venue.

“Our theme and design were very much rustic, casual,” the bride shared. “We chose an outdoor venue on the water because we are outdoor enthusiasts and love marine life. It reminded us so much of home and the Florida Keys.”

As part of their casual, outdoor theme, the St. Pete natives opted for a food truck that with a custom menu reflected their ethnic roots.

“We wanted to incorporate our rustic outdoor theme throughout, and therefore a food truck was the first thing that came to mind! The great thing about Tastes of Tampa Bay is that they are also a full-service catering company so I was confident in their meal preparation, timing, clean up and set up,” the bride shared. “They allowed us to personalize a lot of the menu and even took inspiration from both my Hispanic background and my husband’s German-Polish background. For us, their experience they provided from start to finish was second to none.”

Because of her allergies, the bride searched for an experienced wedding florist who could carefully curate her decor without causing a breakout.

Cotton and Magnolia was quick to respond and knew exactly what we were looking for with little input,” the bride explained. “With my sensitivity to certain types of flowers, I was unsure what would work best for me, but the team at Cotton and Magnolia knew exactly what to choose.

Looking back, Michelle’s most cherished moment included the unforgettable ceremony and the first dance.

“Even though we had nearly 120 guests, I felt as if it was just Michael and me dancing in the room. It was such a special and forever memorable experience,” the bride reminisced.

Alex and Katie both wanted to plan an extra special proposal for the other, so they decided each would get one full day. Katie surprised Alex at The Four Seasons of Palm Beach where she brought her to a romantic beachside picnic surrounded by candles, rose petals, lounge pillows and framed pictures as. A Thousand Years by Christina Perri played in the background and Alex said “yes,” to spending forever with Katie. They popped a bottle of champagne as they watched the sunset on the gorgeous Florida ocean. When Alex thought the evening was coming to an end, Katie had another surprise waiting for her. A private cabana dinner overlooking the ocean. The menu was custom created by Katie and the executive chef to reflect all of the couple’s favorite dishes and wines from around the world.

The next day, Alex packed a bag and drove Katie down to Ft. Lauderdale where she surprised her with a private chartered 40-foot sailboat yacht for the day. Once they got out to the lighthouse, Alex popped the question quickly followed by popping the bubbly! The two enjoyed an afternoon of sailing the crystal blue waters, a gourmet spread of savory and sweet treats and the beautiful sunny skies. We are huge foodies and felt as though our menu should be a reflection of all our favorite places we have been to. We had North Carolina inspired items, dishes we came to love in Barcelona, and different Italian dishes. We put a lot of thought into each dish to ensure all of our guests would it enjoy them just as much as we did.

After shopping around for a caterer that could help us put together a cohesive menu, we found Tastes of Tampa Bay. The last thing we wanted was something traditional, and after working with the team at Tastes of Tampa Bay we were able to take our menu to the next level. We really enjoyed working with Casey! It was so special for us to customize our wedding to reflect who we are individually, and as a couple at our wedding. Whether it’s through your food, cocktails, decor or games, the most important thing is that you make your dreams come true. Remember to create memories you’ll never forget and have great vendors that truly care about making your day special. Some may think that lighting, rentals or videography are not necessary vendors and can be skipped to save money, but we promise it’s worth looking into to create the story of your day.

Do your research when finding the perfect vendors. It’s so important that you pick the right vendors for you that pair perfectly with your style, vision, and personality. We found the majority of our vendors through Marry Me Tampa Bay, and we couldn’t be happier. Not only did they exceed our expectations and give us excellent service, but many of them have worked with one another several times, which made things run even more smoothly. Once your wedding day comes, trust that your vendor team will take care of everything and just enjoy your big day and the start to a beautiful life together!

Burgundy and Pink Jewel Toned Boho Chic Lakeland Wedding

Tampa Bay Bridal Show TheXpos | February 10, 2019

Ashley and Matt’s boho-inspired Lakeland wedding was a vision of outdoor elegance with long lace draped tables, eclectic mismatched tableware, and bright beautiful florals. The Florida bride and groom chose a jewel-toned color palette to perfectly tie together the romantic bohemian vibes they were looking to capture.

“Our theme was a good mix of boho and eclectic. I often gravitate towards that look in my overall day to day style, but mostly I chose it because it delivers a very relaxed and intimate feel,” the bride shared. “More than anything I wanted a wedding that felt like a celebration of close friends and family, which is why I chose the long tables where we could eat together and be close.”

MORE: BOHO WEDDING INSPIRATION

With three months to find the wedding dress of her dreams, the bride looked to Palm Harbor bridal shop Nikki’s Glitz and Glam Bridal Boutique to find a dress that was form-fitting, yet flowy.

“I didn’t go in with much dress inspiration because I only had three months to plan the wedding, so I figured I couldn’t be too picky. I knew for sure I wanted lace, I didn’t want strapless, and I wanted something that was form-fitting, yet flowy. I think I achieved all of that with the dress I picked,” the bride explained. “Nikki’s Glitz and Glam was the last stop of the day and definitely the best place I had been to thus far. Everyone there really catered to me, and they had multiple off-the-rack dresses for me to choose from since I didn’t have time to order one.”

The Lakeland natives wanted delicious food in a fun way, so they turned to Tastes of Tampa Bay for wedding menu that reflected their food preferences with an elegant flare.

I really appreciated that Tastes of Tampa Bay gave us ways to save money by cutting certain things out, but also gave us a wide variety of options to choose from,” the bride shared. “In the end, I was completely blown away by the presentation of the food and everyone absolutely loved the idea of choosing between two of our favorite meals.”

Looking back on their beautiful day of bliss, Ashley and Matt cherished their first look and time with family.

“Our first look was probably the most memorable and best decision we made. I was so nervous to see Matt, and I’m glad that moment was private,” the bride reminisced. “After the first look, we stayed close to each other and were even in the same room before we walked down the aisle. It was fun because we were with our closest friends and family before we headed out to make one of the most important decisions of our lives. It also didn’t take away from seeing each other at the altar, because we both cried!”

Matt proposed on the dock of my parents’ lake house. It’s a special place because we sat there on one of our first dates, bundled up together in the cold, and had our first long talk about seriously dating one another. It’s funny because now that I think about it, my life has revolved around that lake. I’ve grown up near it, went to school on it, lived on it, got engaged on it, and now got married on it. I love that!

Our theme was a good mix of boho and eclectic. I often gravitate towards that look in my overall day to day style, but mostly I chose it because it delivers a very relaxed and intimate feel. More than anything I wanted a wedding that felt like a celebration of close friends and family, which is why I chose the long tables where we could eat together and be close. I wanted the string lights overhead and delicious food on our plates so it felt relaxed like a backyard get together. I also loved how cozy the ceremony was with the vintage couches and chairs outside and everyone snuggled up under blankets and coats.

What were your colors?
My colors were inspired by my bouquet. I found a picture of the one I wanted and just went with any color that was either a part of the bouquet or matched it. The colors ranged from burgundy to dark reds to light pinks, and a lot of jewel tones. I let my bridesmaids choose their dress and color as long as it went with the bouquet.

Expert Advice: How Much Should You Budget for Wedding Catering?

Wedding Planning Advice | How Much Should You Budget for Wedding Catering | Best Tampa Bay Wedding Caterer

THE EXPERTS:

Best Tampa Bay Wedding Caterers

What is the average cost of hiring a professional wedding caterer in Tampa Bay/Sarasota (not including the venue)?

Paulina Nicka from Amici’s Catered Cuisine estimates:

“If you have 100 guests then you can expect about $30 in only food costs at Amici’s. That doesn’t include service and other costs. Average costs for a 100 person guest list would be about $4,000-$5,000.”

If you’re adding in rentals and alcohol, Casey Grawien of Tastes of Tampa Bay shares couples should budget:

“Full service catering, rentals and bar services, costs will start at $65/guest.”

Why does the price of wedding catering vary?

Laura Walsh from Olympia Catering shares:

“We like to have as many details as possible when quoting the price of wedding catering because there are many factors that determine the cost. Some considerations include what types of food, amount of food choices and portion sizes, how the food will be served, the amount of guests being served, where and what time the food will be served, and even what vessels the food will be served on. Be sure to discuss all of these with your caterer to receive an accurate price quote and avoid charges later in planning. Some examples that have an effect on pricing: having a pasta buffet vs. having steak and lobster (higher food costs); having a four-hour reception vs. having a five-hour reception (higher labor cost); having standard china and flatware vs. specialty ordered china and flatware (higher rental cost).”

Tastes of Tampa Bay adds:

“Pricing for catering has much to do with the quality of staff and menu options. Menu customization, scratch cooking, sourcing locally, and the time that goes into our menu preparation are all aspects that go into pricing our higher quality offerings. Frozen and mass produced, generic items tend to be cheaper and offer little in quality and customization.”

What is the difference in hiring a restaurant versus full-service caterer?

Tastes of Tampa Bay shares:

“A full-service caterer will have the equipment, staff and know how to create a restaurant quality meal on-site at your event and serve it to your guests within the specified timeline. Hot, fresh, and delicious are priorities in both a restaurant and catering setting, but how this gets executed is very different and there are many extraneous factors that a caterer must be flexible with at an event (power offerings, timeline changes, weather, etc.)”

Amici’s knows that having a properly trained staff is key:

“Caterers have different training for their staff when they work on-site at many different venues.”

Is it less expensive to choose a buffet over a plated meal?

Tastes of Tampa Bay shares that labor can make a buffet less expensive, but the ultimate price factor goes into the food:

“The expense is determined by the menu selection. Pricing remains the same food-wise, but service for a buffet is less than a plated meal.”

Amici’s chimes in:

“It can end up being almost the same. The difference is plated requires more staff, one server for every 20 guests. Plated requires more staffing, and for buffet style you need one server for 30 people, though buffets typically require more food.”

Amici’s Catered Cuisine

What are some qualities couples should look for in a wedding caterer?

Tastes of Tampa Bay shares the following when it comes to finding a quality caterer:

“First look at what you prioritize as a couple as far as what you’d like to offer your guests. We prefer to spoil our clients’ guests with excellent service and personalized, seasonally driven food and cocktails. If this isn’t important to you, and you’re looking at price alone, determine that in the beginning and be honest about it upfront, just know you may have to compromise quality.”

Olympia Catering emphasis professionalism:

“First and foremost, be sure to hire a licensed and insured caterer with a positive reputation. Make sure it is an established, professional business that will show up and serve food in a safe way for your guests. I also suggest hiring an experienced caterer that is large enough with staff, equipment, and backup vehicles. You never know what can happen: staff get in an accident, power goes out, the chef falls ill. Having an experienced caterer with backup means they can fix any problems seamlessly without the guests knowing a thing.”

Amici’s adds to look for the following:

“Reviews, reputation, menu customization, make sure they offer a tasting, experienced staff, friendly and responsive customer service.”

Navy, Blush and Copper Industrial Chic Ybor City Wedding | CL Space

Tampa Bay Best Local Wedding Venue 2021

Amanda and Larry’s Ybor City wedding wasn’t only a celebration of their love for one another, but it also supported a great cause.

“Every November the CL Space holds an online auction for a wedding package that includes a variety of wedding vendors with all proceeds going to the Children’s Home Network. After reviewing the vendors and what they were providing in the wedding package, as well as checking out the venue in person, I knew I had to bid on it!”

Going with an industrial chic theme to complement their modern, yet historic wedding venue, the St. Pete couple chose a color palette of navy and blush with copper accents.

“I am a Transportation and Land Use Planner, so I love urban settings and the historic charm that the downtown area brings. Additionally, Larry and I both love exploring new cities and seeing how older spaces have been transformed into something new,” Amanda shared. “I used Marry Me Tampa Bay for ceremony and reception inspiration. When I was first trying to decide on a venue, it was a great resource for seeing real weddings in spaces all across Tampa Bay and with all different styles.”

With photography listed as one of the most important elements on her list to relive the lasting memories of their day, the bride wanted a wedding photographer who captured creative, unrehearsed shots and used natural light in their work.

“Since Larry and I had never really done professional photos together, we wanted someone who would ease our nervousness. I have several friends who had used her Kéra Photography‘s services in the past, and I loved how their pictures turned out. Kera and her assistant were so pleasant to work with during our wedding day. They knew just how to capture all the little details and even went along with my request to go on top of a parking garage in Ybor City to capture shots with the Tampa skyline in the background.”

The couple described themselves as “people who take good food seriously,” so hiring a Tampa wedding caterer was a big decision. Lucky for the couple, Tastes of Tampa Bay excels in both service and quality when it comes to catering.

“We wanted a wedding catering company that would take our food tastes into consideration and create a menu that was personalized to us,” the bride explained. “I am half Filipino and really wanted to incorporate some traditional Filipino food, while also including healthy and fresh foods that Larry and I enjoy. Some of our wedding day menu items included: bacon wrapped plantains, veggie egg-rolls, adobo chicken, pancit (Filipino noodle dish), chimichurri steak, and fresh vegetables. Our guests really enjoyed the food. Plus, the dinner portions were quite large.”

The couple wanted a non-traditional wedding cake that steered away from the large tiered varieties. Opting for a smaller dessert with cake pops from Sweetly Dipped Confections was the perfect choice.

“Whenever Larry and I go out for dinner and have dessert, we always choose carrot cake, so, of course we decided to have a carrot cake. Sweetly Dipped was very easy to work with and all of their creations are gorgeous. Plus, the cake pops tasted good!” the bride gushed.

Looking back, the bride shared that some of their most cherished wedding day moments happened during the reception.

“The father/daughter and mother/son dance were very memorable for us. It just made us so happy seeing our parents happy and celebrating our special day with us. The dance floor was packed the entire night, and even my grandma was moving and grooving. All of our friends and family kept telling us they’d never had so much at a wedding,” the bride reminisced.

The Proposal:
Larry and I were headed to the Bahamas for his 28th birthday trip via the ferry out of Fort Lauderdale. We’ve been together since 2006 (high school sweethearts), so this was just a normal celebration for us. Once we arrived at our resort and had taken some time to unwind in our room, Larry told me to close my eyes and wait. I seriously had no idea he was about to propose. He’s quite the comedian, so I figured he was just going to show me some funny outfit for the trip. However, when we told me to open my eyes I found him on one knee with the ring in his hand and him asking me to marry him! Of course, the answer was yes! So while it was his birthday, I ultimately received the best present. What made it even sweeter was that prior to our trip, he had already taken the time to ask permission from my dad and had picked out the ring with his mom.

Navy and blush with copper accents. We wanted colors that classic, yet complimented our venue. Plus, I am obsessed with all things copper, and it added just the right amount of accents for our industrial chic theme.

What advice would you give to other Tampa Bay couples?
Planning the wedding for me wasn’t really stressful until the last two months when everything started to happen at once. Plus, we were in the middle of buying our first home. Life can get chaotic while planning a wedding but it is important to remember not to stress the little details. In the end, it is all about celebrating your relationship with one another and having those that mean the most to you around on your special day. Nobody is going to remember all the minor details. All your guests will remember is the smile on your faces!

Vibrant Fuchsia and Pink Modern Tampa Bay Wedding Inspiration | Haus 820

Wedding Flea Tampa Bridal Show May 2018

Modern Tampa Bay weddings are growing in popularity with the rise of industrial style wedding venues, like Lakeland’s Haus 820. The sleek design and minimalistic Tampa Bay wedding venue is the perfect location for the couple wanting to design their wedding from top to bottom.

Tampa Bay wedding planner, Alexa Kritis of Long Aisle Events, shared her inspiration for designing this vibrant, fuchsia, pink and eucalyptus wedding shoot.

“I was really inspired by the Essie nail polish color ‘Fashionista.’ I wanted to show brides not to be afraid to use color and to go outside the box of neutral, blush, ivory that’s been so popular lately,” the planner explained. “The circular balloon arch was one of my favorite elements. The balloon and flower mixture gives an element of whimsy and fun, but still elevated and formal.”

The long white tables and cross back chairs with bright pink seats from A Chair Affair were the perfect accent to the eucalyptus filled centerpieces. While a beautiful charcuterie display from Lakeland wedding caterer Tastes of Tampa Bay created colorful and edible decor.

Haus 820’s aesthetically clean and modern wedding style features oversized warehouse windows, 17-foot ceilings and a wide-open space that is the perfect blank canvas to transform into a completely custom atmosphere.

“The white wash brick really let the colors of the styled shoot shine and be the main event. I loved the color wall outside, which looked amazing against the models white jumpsuit and the big confetti balloon,” Alexa gushed.

How to Set a Wedding Budget in Tampa Bay

When planning one of the most memorable days of your lives, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of wedding inspiration pins, however, you have to be realistic when it comes to planning a wedding that you can afford.

In the Tampa Bay area, we find that $30,000 tends to be a good reference point for a wedding budget when hiring professional reputable vendors.

RESEARCH THE AREA’S BEST WEDDING PROS

You’ll have some fixed costs, such as wedding photography, videography and DJ which will be the same whether you have two guests or two hundred, but most of your wedding budget will depend on the number of guests you invite. Which means a wedding with 50 guests and a $30,000 budget can do a lot more than a wedding with 200 guests and a $30,000 budget.

The largest amount of your wedding budget will go toward food/venue/beverage, so if that cost is $150/per person, then by cutting 10 people from your guest list, you just saved $1,500. In addition to that $1,500, your cake, invitations, number of centerpieces, linens, chairs, place settings etc. is also dependent on the number of attendees, so that’s another savings.

To learn more insight on setting a wedding budget in Tampa Bay, and how much you should budget per vendor category, watch our Expert Advice video below:

Tampa Bay Inspired Wedding Menus to Fit Your Wedding Venue

If you ask any wedding guest the most important part of a Tampa Bay wedding after the ceremony, they’ll almost always respond with “the food.”

Weddings in Tampa Bay are home to many locally inspired dishes. Whether it be fresh seafood from the Gulf or menus with Cuban flair, the area’s top wedding caterers can create a custom cuisines to match your wedding venue’s atmosphere.

We’ve asked the area’s best wedding caterers: Tastes of Tampa Bay, SaltBlock Catering, Amici’s Catered Cuisine, Olympia Catering, and Good Food Events and Catering to share how they allow a venue to inspire their menus.

NOVA 535

The versatility of the NOVA 535 space cannot be overstated. From a small outdoor elopement to a raucous dance party the options to personalize your celebration are endless. It doesn’t hurt that they have award winning bathrooms either.

As a bonus to a caterer, rather than being tucked in a corner or alleyway, their thoughtful kitchen allows us to focus on what we do best; Delivering freshly prepared, amazing food for our clients that elevate the event and excite guests.

Because of the venue’s many set up options, you can move away from the traditional service if you wish and start with a myriad of passed hors d’oeuvres or indulge your guests with a tri-station dinner complete with hand tossed, seasonal salads, porchetta carving station and suspended risotto bar. As dancing begins, treat your attendees to our indulgent Strolling Sundae Bar followed by a late night snack with our Street Surfer food truck offering snacks like Mojo Pork Nachos + Loaded Beer Battered Fries in the courtyard. The Barn at Crescent Lake

The Barn at Crescent Lake at Old McMicky’s Farm offers gorgeous lakefront views is the perfect setting for a BBQ dinner. Lange Farm

At any farm, barn or ranch properties, such as Lange Farm, it’s great to have southern BBQ items. We love elevated versions of “BBQ” such as a Southern Land & Sea Station with Carved Beef Brisket with House-Made BBQ Sauce and Spicy Sautéed Shrimp with Tasso Ham Gravy, Served with Red Mill Cheddar Grits and a Toppings Bar of Crispy Fried Onion Strings, Diced Tomatoes, and Hot Sauce – Laura Walsh | Olympia Catering

The Vault

Although all catering service styles suit the historic venue, we feel that the plated service style best complements the classic, elegance of  the Vault in downtown Tampa. In addition to pairing well with the venue, this service style requires no front of house setup, which maximizes space for guest comfort.

For a dinner menu, we highly suggest an upscale duet plated entree, such as our Cabernet Braised Beef Short Ribs and Sautéed Gulf Coast Grouper, as this allows guests to experience the best of both worlds. -Amy Kensinger | Good Food Events and Catering

CL Space

We love to do some twists on classic Cuban cuisine at a wedding venue like the CL Space. This could be incorporated into a passed hors d’oeuvres such as a Petite Paella Skewer with Garlic Shrimp, Spanish Chorizo, Saffron Ricecake, and Sweet Pea Aioli. Or a twist on a classic, an “Arroz con Pollo” Small Plate Station with Lemon-Zested Saffron Quinoa with Braised Florida Citrus Tomatillo Sofrito Chicken, Accented with Early Peas and Diced Piquillo Peppers, Garnished with Crispy Shallots, and a Crema Drizzle – Laura Walsh | Olympia Catering

Glazer’s Children’s Museum

The Glazer’s Children’s Museum is essentially a blank canvas with an amazing view of the Tampa skyline, Hillsborough River and H.B Plant Museum. Inspired by the tv series Mad Men, the event space is planned to turn into a mid-century modern, 60’s penthouse. The SaltBlock team got creative and interpreted the theme into a fun, contemporary meal that will take party-goers’ taste buds back a couple of decades including: Dijon Whipped Deviled Eggs with Sherry Reduction, Scallion and Smoked Paprika, Beef Bourguignon with Braised Angus Beef, Cotes du Rhone, Forest Mushrooms, Sourdough Toast and Banana Cream in a Banana Mousse Tartlet with Dulce de Leche. -Anggie Rocco | SaltBlock Catering

Tampa Bay Wedding World Changer Free Wedding Giveaway: Astrid and Gary

Ybor City Wedding | CL Space Wedding

Every Tampa Bay wedding is meaningful and has its own unique touches, however Astrid and Gary’s Ybor City wedding occurred under very special circumstances.

The Clearwater couple were gifted a free wedding by local Tampa Bay wedding vendors after applying for Black Sheep Bride’s Wedding World Changer Day. Unlike most wedding giveaways, the main criteria for this dream wedding was that the bride and groom be actively involved in their community and donate 100 service hours to pay the goodness forward.

The groom is a firefighter in Palm Harbor, and the bride is studying pediatric occupational therapy and volunteers with her local church’s children’s ministry.

“They were planning for a wedding in a few years, however Astrid’s mother’s recent battle with cancer had them seeking ways to plan their wedding sooner. Out of the applications available the Tampa vendor team voted, and their story touched our hearts most,” Black Sheep Bride editor Danielle Calhoun shared.

Astrid was the first to discover that she and Gary were chose as the deserving couple and surprised him at the fire station with the good news.

“I still wake up sometimes thinking it was all just a dream. Never in a million years did we think we would win, not just a free wedding, but the most stunning free wedding in the entire world!” the bride gushed. “It warms our hearts that all of these talented vendors put in so much hard work and dedication to give us our dream wedding in just one month.”

The wedding came as a blessing during a dark, personal time for the bride.

“I do not think any of the vendors knew this, but for me personally this was a life changing experience. Ever since my mom was diagnosed with cancer I have had a really difficult time getting through life. I went from being this energetic and outgoing person to wanting nothing to do with anything or anyone. I started shutting out many people in my life because I was afraid of being hurt,” the bride revealed. “I truly believe that this was more than just a free wedding and that God put all these amazing people in our lives to remind us that there is still a lot of good out in the world. I am forever thankful because now I can be the wife that Gary deserves.”

The bride and groom plan to pay forward their good fortune by volunteering with Laundry Love.

“Gary and I decided we want to get involved with several non-profit organizations. The Laundry Love project offers free laundry days in low income neighborhoods,” Astrid explained. “There are not enough words to describe the gratitude we have for everyone involved in this process, and I just pray that we make them proud with how we pay it forward.”

I was extremely nervous for hair and makeup because I have never liked how I look after getting everything done professionally, but Michele Renee The Studio was so amazing! I was obsessed with my hair and makeup. Michele made me feel so comfortable and beautiful, and I am forever grateful for that.

Outdoor, Tampa Wedding Ceremony at Outdoor, Ybor City Wedding Venue CL SpaceOutdoor, Bride and Groom Wedding Portrait in Lace, White Wedding Dress and Grey Groom's Suit with Downtown Tampa SkylineThe Proposal:
Gary and I have been together for a little over six years. He finally proposed in February at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor. I don’t remember much of the actual proposal, because I was in extreme shock, but I do remember that we started our day “normal” shopping at IKEA. It was extremely rainy, and Gary was mad because of the weather. I thought he was being such a big baby, and I tried canceling our date that night because he was annoying me. Little did I know that his lame attitude had to do with an outside proposal later that night.

Next thing I knew we were on our way to Philippe Park with a photo album filled with pictures of the past six years. The last several pages were photos of him and I catching the bouquet and garter at weddings, and the very last photo was an engagement ring. After he proposed, our family members were hiding all around the area, and they jumped out screaming in excitement.

Rustic garden. I wanted a rustic, Joanna Gaines type of look with succulents. I literately made a Pinterest board with maybe six photos of what I envision and my vendors brought my dream wedding to life. I loved that the design team was able to keep things simple yet romantic.

What were your colors?
Cream, blush and lavender.

What was your floral inspiration?
I wanted succulents.

After spending one minute with Andrea of Andrea Layne Floral Designs we had an instant connection, so I just let her do her thing. When she delivered by flowers, I cried. They were stunning. Any bride would be bonkers not to choose Andrea Layne Floral Designs for their wedding.

We wanted simple, white and lace wedding cake.

Trudy Melissa Cakes delivered the most gorgeous and delicious cake ever! Everyone should book a cake testing trial with Trudy; she is so much fun and all of her cakes are yummy. The hardest part was narrowing down flavors; we wanted them all!

This day is all about you and your husband! Do not ever lose sight of that. Things can and will go wrong, so do not waste time or energy on trying to fix everything.

It will fly by, so make every second count. Best advice I have is to scroll down and use all of the vendors listed. They all have hearts of gold and a passion for what they do!
